Project Summary
Funded by the EPA's Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Program, the Lowerre Neighborhood Brownfield Plan was initiated in February 2014 and seeks to integrate the needs and desires of the Lowerre community (Lawrence Street Area) with a potential multi-use trail running along the former Getty Square branch of the Putnam rail line. This passenger line once provided a direct connection to New York City, but has been inactive for over 50 years.
The viability of the vacant parcels along this former rail corridor have been marred by possible rail-related contamination ever since, and will be examined for their ability to support a multi-use trail that would provide a direct connection to trails in Van Cortlandt Park and, by extension, to the Van Cortlandt Park / 242nd St station on the MTA's 1 Line. These connections would open up opportunities for the residents of Yonkers and New York City to access each other's respective services and recreational facilities, with the potential to facilitate new live, work, and play interactions between the two communities.
It is important that these opportunities work for the residents of Yonkers, and the Lowerre Neighborhood Brownfield Plan is striving to identify ways in which a multi-use trail could serve the needs of the community. Please check in frequently for details on public meetings, special events, and information related to the project.
